Sentences
"Por principio, toda traducción es buena. En cualquier caso, pasa con ellas lo que con las mujeres: de alguna manera son necesarias, aunque no todas son perfectas"

Augusto Monterroso

-La palabra mágica-

"Es imposible traducir la poesía. ¿Acaso se puede traducir la música?"

Voltaire

"Translating poetry is like making jewelry. Every word counts, and each sparkles with so many facets. Translating prose is like sculpting: get the shape and the lines right, then polish the seams later."

James Nolan

"La traducción destroza el espíritu del idioma"

Federico García Lorca

Soneto X. Oh dulces prendas...

llevadme junto el mal que me dejastes;

si no, sospecharé que me pusistes
en tantos bienes porque deseastes
verme morir entre memorias tristes.

Sonnet X. Oh sweet tokens...

Oh, sweet tokens, sadly found by me,
sweet and happy when God willed it so!
Together with my memory you go,
making my death your conspiracy.

Who ever could have told me, having seen
the joy you brought to me not long ago,
that, in time, I would come to know
you as the source of my great suffering?

As in one hour you have laid to waste
all the good you gave me by degrees,
so take away the ill you left, with haste;

if not, I will suspect that it would please
you to let me know your bounty's taste
then watch me die among sad memories.

    SONNET X. O SWEET LOVES...

O sweet loves, that proved bad luck to me,
sweet and happy for as long as God so willed!
You are joined together in my memory
conspiring with it how to end my life.

    Who could have guessed, considering
    how much happiness you brought,
you would return one day to me,
accompanied by a grief that was so great?

Since in a moment you have snatched from me
such joy as you once gave to me piecemeal,
bear off from me the sorrow you have left.

If not, I shall suspect you placed me
in such joys because you wished
to see me die in memories so sad.

    SONNET X. OH SWEET PLEDGES...

Oh sweet pledges, found to my sadness,
sweet and happy when God wanted!
You are joined in my memory,
and together you conjure up death to me.

Who could have told me, seeing me in past hours,
when I was so glad because of you,
that you would someday mean to me
    such a deep sadness?

Since in one single hour you took away from me
all the good you gave me for a time,
take away from me now the pain that you have left me.

If not, I will suspect that you made me
    so happy because you wanted
to see me die among sad memories.
