"Por principio, toda traducción es buena. En cualquier caso, pasa con ellas lo que con las mujeres: de alguna manera son necesarias, aunque no todas son perfectas"

Augusto Monterroso

-La palabra mágica-

"Es imposible traducir la poesía. ¿Acaso se puede traducir la música?"

Voltaire

"Translating poetry is like making jewelry. Every word counts, and each sparkles with so many facets. Translating prose is like sculpting: get the shape and the lines right, then polish the seams later."

James Nolan

"La traducción destroza el espíritu del idioma"

Rima XXVIII.

me envía tu corazón?

Y en el luminoso día
y en la alta noche sombría,
si en todo cuanto rodea
al alma que te desea,
te creo sentir y ver,

dime: ¿es que toco y respiro
soñando, o que en un suspiro
me das tu aliento a beber?

Rhyme XXVIII. When amid obscure shadows...

When amid obscure shadows
a lost voice murmurs
disturbing its sad calm ...
If in my soul's depths
I hear it sweetly sounding,

tell me, Is it the wind moans
in its convolutions or that
in passing your sighs speak of love?

When the red sun shines
in my window at morning
and my love evokes your shadow,
if I think I feel the press
of another mouth on mine,

tell me, Is it that blind I rave
or that your heart sends me
a kiss in a sigh?

If in the luminous day
and in the deep gloomy night;
if in all that surrounds
my soul that desires you,
I think I can feel and see you,

tell me, Do I feel and think in a dream
or is it that in a sigh
you give me your breath to drink?

    RHYME XXVIII. WHEN FROM A LOST DARK...

    When from a lost dark
    shadow a voice murmurs
    disturbing its gloomy calm,
    if hearing it then resonates
    sweetly in the depths of my soul,
    tell me: is it that the wind moans
    as it passes, or that your sighs
    speak to me of love when it happens?

    When the sun shines red
    in my window in the morning
    and my love evokes your shadow,
    if on my mouth I then feel convinced
    of the impression of another mouth,
    tell me: is it blind delirium,
    or that your heart sends me
    a kiss in a sigh?

    And in the luminous day
    and in the deep shadowy night,
    if in everything then that surrounds
    a soul that desires you
    it believes it feels and sees you,
    tell me: is it that I dream of touching
    and inhaling, or that in a sigh
    I am given your breath to drink?

    RHYME XXVIII. WHEN A VOICE IN DUSKY SHADOWS HIDDEN...

    When a voice in dusky shadows hidden
    Murmurs and disturbs its mournful calm,
    If I hear its echoings unbidden
    In my soul's recesses like a psalm;
    Tell me: - Is it but the wind lamenting
    In its flurries madly circumventing,
    Or may I interpret, that thy sigh
    Speaks to me of love in passing by?

    When the red sun on my window glistens
    In the morn and love invokes thy shade,
    If I feel with sensitive persistence
    How another mouth on mine is laid;
    Tell me, is it but a frantic madness
    Blindly generated by my sadness,
    Or else did thy heart, a true ally
    Waft to me a kiss within a sigh?

    If, the brilliant day with night confounding
    I, who love thee, seem so near to thee,
    If, in every object me surrounding
    Proves thy presence its ubiquity;
    Tell me: - Is my whole existence seeming,
    Do I touch and breathe while I am dreaming,
    Or, in sighs transmitted, shall I think
    Thou hast given me thy breath to drink?

    RHYME XXVIII. WHEN, AMID THE SHADES OF VESPERS...

    When, amid the shades of vespers,
    Murmuring a faint voice whispers,
    Troubling the calm solemnity;
    If at the bottom of my spirit
    Sweetly resonant I hear it -
    Tell me: is it the wind, crying,
    Passes, or that thine own sighing
    Breathes of love in drifting by?

    When the sun gleams red and clearly
    In my window mornings early,
    And my love evokes thy vision;
    If I seem to feel the impression
    Of another mouth on mine -
    Tell me: is it madness nighing
    Or that thy heart in its sighing
    Sends to me a kiss of thine?

    If, in the luminous day and bright
    And in the somber depths of night;
    If in all around me lying
    (Who so deeply thee desire)
    Thee I seem to feel and see -
    Tell me: is it I respire
    Dreaming, or that in thy sighing
    Thy breath to drink thou givest me?
