Sentences
"Por principio, toda traducción es buena. En cualquier caso, pasa con ellas lo que con las mujeres: de alguna manera son necesarias, aunque no todas son perfectas"

Augusto Monterroso

-La palabra mágica-

"Es imposible traducir la poesía. ¿Acaso se puede traducir la música?"

Voltaire

"Translating poetry is like making jewelry. Every word counts, and each sparkles with so many facets. Translating prose is like sculpting: get the shape and the lines right, then polish the seams later."

James Nolan

"La traducción destroza el espíritu del idioma"

Rima VIII. Cuando miro el azul horizonte...

¡Cuando miro el azul horizonte
perderse a lo lejos,
al través de una gasa de polvo
dorado e inquieto;
me parece posible arrancarme
del mísero suelo
y flotar con la niebla dorada
en átomos leves
cual ella deshecho!

Cuando miro de noche en el fondo
oscuro del cielo
las estrellas temblar como ardientes
pupilas de fuego;
me parece posible a do brillan
subir en un vuelo,
y anegarme en su luz, y con ellas
en lumbre encendido
fundirme en un beso.

En el mar en la duda en que bogo
ni aún sé lo que creo;
sin embargo estas ansias me dicen
que yo llevo algo
divino aquí dentro.

Rhyme VIII. When I stare at the blue horizon...

When I stare at the blue horizon
vanishing in the distance
behind a veil of dust
golden and troubled
I think I can break away
from the wretched earth
and fly with the golden haze
as slight atoms
dispersed and unmade

When I stare into the night in the dark
depths of the sky
and the stars trembling like ardent
pupils of fire
I think I can get there
rocketing to where they shine
and flood myself in their light with them
in brilliance burning
blend in one kiss

In the sea of doubt where I sail
I don't even know what I believe in
still these yearnings say to me
that I carry something
divine here within

RHYME VIII. WHEN I WATCH THE BLUE HORIZON...

When I watch the blue horizon
    vanish in the distance
    through a gold and unsettled
    gauze of dust,
it seems possible to me to leave
    this miserable earth,
and float with the golden fog
    in weightless atoms
    as scattered as it is

When I watch at night, in the dark
    depths of the sky,
    the stars tremble like passionate
    flaming eyes,
it seems possible to me to rise
    soaring to where one shines,
and to bathe in its light, and be ignited
and to fuse with its fire
    in a kiss

In this ocean of doubt in which I paddle
    I don't really believe it:
    Nonetheless, these yearnings tell me
    that I take in
    something divine here!

RHYME VIII. WHEN I BEHOLD THE BLUE HORIZON MERGE...

When I behold the blue horizon merge
And lose itself afar within a gauze
Of restless, golden dust, my fancies urge,
That I could break all ordinary laws
And it seems possible to tear away
My eager spirit from this wretched clay,
To float with golden mists, dissolved in bright
And myriad atoms of celestial light.

When I behold, at night, the trembling stars
Within the dark recesses of the sky,
So that my fancy vividly compares
Their lustre with an ardent, burning eye,
It then seems possible to wing in flight
To where they shine and bathe within their light
To kindle with them in a blazing sea
And in a kiss confound identity.

Although within a sea of doubt I plash
And spurn beliefs, which with my reason clash,
Yet they proclaim, these anxious doubts of mine,
A certain trace of origin divine.

    Translated by Jules Renard

RHYME VIII. WHEN I BEHOLD IN THE DISTANCE EVANISH...

When I behold in the distance evanish
    The horizon blue,
As through a shimmering, nebulous haze
    Of golden hue,
Possible it seems for me to flee the misery
    That is my due
And float amid the golden mistiness
    In atoms light
    Like mist unto.

When in the darkling recesses of heaven,
    I see at night
The starts atwinkle, as glowing, glimmering
    Points of light,
Whither they shine it seems I can mount thither
    In sudden flight,
And bathe me in their beams, and burningly
    Myself with them
    In a kiss unite

Even what I believe I know not, floating
    In doubting's sea;
None the less I bear, these yearnings tell me
    Something divine
    Here within me.
